So rare is this species that you need a permit to export it from the jungle. The large size makes a dramatic statement. Each is 8" wide by 5" tall, with both male and female together in an 11" by 14" frame. O. goliath is the world's second largest butterfly species. Flight is leisurely, but controlled and powerful. Males pursue their females for long distances, rising high over the forest canopy then folding their wings and diving down to tree level to mate, even though they risk hindwing damage by the sharp tarsal claws of females.

Includes both the male (more colorful with gold shading on the lower wings and green on the top wings) and the female (subdued brown on the top wings with gold and yellow on the lower wings).

This butterfly comes from Gumi Village, Papua New Guinea. (Read about sustainable butterfly collecting in Papua New Guinea.
